Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is a common by-product of the combustion (burning) of fossil fuels. Most fuel-burning equipment including natural gas, propane and oil, produces little CO when properly installed and maintained. In the home the by-products of combustion are usually vented safely to the Exterior. However, if the venting process is disrupted by an improperly sealed exhaust for example, CO production can quickly rise to dangerous levels.
Dangerous amounts of CO can accumulate within a home due to poorly installed, poorly maintained or damaged appliances that use combustion. The only way to detect Carbon Monoxide within a home is with a carbon monoxide detector.
Global background concentrations, outdoors, fall in the range of 0.05 to O.l2 parts per million (ppm). 11ppm is the Maximum recommended average concentration for Continuous Exposure for healthy adults in any eight-hour period.
